MAKE ME BETTER By UNKLE RECONSTRUCTION - Ten Fé

TEN FÉ has already spread their resonating sound waves amongst peers across the pond, the London duo is well on its way to a swift U.S. introduction with their masterly style of enticing indie pop.

UNKLE were one of the original artists releasing material through noted U.K. label Mo’ Wax, which helped launch the instrumental, mid-’90s downtempo breakbeat revival eventually termed trip-hop. Though hardly the label’s highest-profile group (at least until the long-delayed release of their debut LP in 1998), UNKLE’s members included label head James Lavelle, who formed Mo’ Wax while still in his teens as an antidote to the increasingly stale acid jazz/Northern soul scene.

HANS IS DRIVING By VITALIC

Vitalic is the alter ego of Pascal Arbez, a French programmer/multi-instrumentalist who blends electro, techno, and house -- as well as elements of classical, rock, Italo-disco, and '70s electronic music -- into a sound that recalls the work of fellow countrymen Daft Punk and Air, but has its own hard-edged playfulness. Arbez played trombone as a child and young adult, but became fascinated with dance music when he heard Daft Punk in the mid-'90s. Inspired by them as well as Giorgio MoroderArbezswitched to analog synths and began writing and recording as Dima. He released his first 12" in 1996 on Citizen Records, a label started by Arbez and like-minded friends. Arbez used the Dima moniker (as well as the alias Hustler Pornstar) until 2000, when he switched to the name Vitalic.

MIDNIGHT SUN By ISAAC DELUSION

Isaac Delusion almost seems like an accident, a dream scrawled blindly in a bedside journal in the early morning hours, so you won't forget what happened to you while you were asleep. The band was just an experiment, after all, when it began in Paris three years ago : singer/songwriter Loic Fleury and electronic producer Jules Paco, who had originally found each other at age 14, now in their twenties, wanted to combine their disparate passions. Paco lived in a world of electronica and hip-hop, influenced by artists like Aphex Twin, Bonobo, Gang Starr and The Pharcyde, while Fleury's love was folk music ; the singer played in a quiet indie-folk band called Lucky Lindy, idolizing artists like Pink Floyd, Elliott Smith and Sufjan Stevens. But when the pair began trading influences, the sounds they made were more personal explorations than anything.

Sacerdotisa By Pumarosa

Pumarosa’s early existence has been defined by strange, distinctly different spaces. There’s the half-knocked down house in Peckham they played, where the band carried on performing despite a gas leak and an electricity shut down. A packed-out crowd watched through gaps in the walls and the landlords swore after they’d never allow a band to play there ever again. There’s also the old Italian cinema they were invited to write and record in by a local surrealist, early songs being developed in the company of dramatic clifftops on the Calabrian coast, local villagers coming to the cinema to witness night-time improvisation sessions.

16.

TRÉSOR By FLAVIEN BERGER

Parisian musician Flavien Berger released his first full album (plus a three-song EP) this past year on French label Pan European. Berger commissioned an accompanying music video for each of the album's songs, and for the album's last and title track, "Léviathan" he recruited New York-based artist Meriem Bennani to direct a short film for the sumptuous, 15-minute long electronic song—"a tricky format," as Bennani put it.

LKJ - A.A.L (AGAINST ALL LOGIC)
